A new oral version of the weight-loss drug Wegovy is now available in the United States, offering adults with obesity or overweight a once-daily pill alternative to the traditional weekly injection, health officials and manufacturer Novo Nordisk announced.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Wegovy pill in late December 2025, making it the first oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medication approved for weight management. The oral version contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, that has been used in injectable Wegovy and diabetes medication Ozempic. News Channel 3-12

According to CNN reporting, the starter dose of the pill — 1.5 milligrams — is being offered at about $149 per month for patients paying cash, part of an arrangement between Novo Nordisk and U.S. authorities to increase affordability. The 4 mg dose is also available at the same price until mid-April, after which it is expected to rise to about $199 per month. Larger doses, including 9 mg and 25 mg options, are set at approximately $299 per month. Patients with insurance may pay significantly less under savings programs that bring monthly costs to around $25 for eligible people. News Channel 3-12

The Wegovy pill is indicated for adults with obesity or those who are overweight and have associated medical issues, such as heart disease, in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Clinical trials that supported FDA approval showed that patients taking the pill experienced significant weight loss when adherent to treatment, often comparable to results seen with injectable GLP-1 drugs. One important distinction from the injectable form is how the pill must be taken: Wegovy requires oral intake on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, and patients should avoid eating, drinking or taking other medications for about 30 minutes afterward to ensure proper absorption. Health experts see the oral option as a major step forward for weight-loss treatments because it may appeal to people who are reluctant to use injections. Unlike weekly shots, the once-daily tablet fits more easily into daily routines and could increase treatment uptake among those with obesity who have avoided traditional GLP-1 medications due to needle anxiety or inconvenience. The launch also positions Wegovy in a competitive weight-loss drug market, where rivals such as Eli Lilly are developing their own oral GLP-1 medications. Novo Nordisk’s pricing strategy and broader availability — including through pharmacies, telehealth providers and online platforms — aim to make the medication accessible to a wide range of patients.
