Why Many Experts Say the Answer Is Yes
As artificial intelligence becomes more capable of writing computer code, designing websites and solving programming problems in seconds, many students are beginning to question whether a degree in computer science is still a wise investment.
Across African universities and online discussion forums, the same question is appearing with increasing frequency: If AI can already build software, what will programmers do in the future?
It is a reasonable concern. Over the past few years, generative AI systems have demonstrated an ability to generate applications, explain complex algorithms, detect programming errors and even assist in designing complete software projects. Tasks that once consumed hours of manual work can now often be completed in minutes.
Yet many technology researchers argue that these advances do not signal the end of computer science. Instead, they mark the beginning of a new phase in the profession—one in which software engineers increasingly work alongside artificial intelligence rather than competing against it.
Technology Has Reinvented Software Development Before
The software industry has experienced repeated waves of disruption.
When personal computers became mainstream during the 1980s, programmers had to learn entirely new ways of building software. The rise of the internet in the 1990s transformed desktop applications into web platforms. Smartphones created an enormous demand for mobile developers, while cloud computing reshaped how businesses deployed and managed digital services.
Each technological shift raised concerns that existing skills would become obsolete. Instead, the profession expanded, creating entirely new careers and specialisations.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, technological change is expected to reshape millions of jobs over the coming years. While some routine tasks are likely to become automated, demand for people with expertise in artificial intelligence, software engineering, cybersecurity, data analysis and digital infrastructure is also expected to grow.
AI Can Generate Code, But It Cannot Define the Problem
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence is that writing code is the primary responsibility of a software engineer.
Experienced developers point out that programming represents only one stage of a much larger process.
Before a single line of code is written, someone must understand the client’s needs, identify the problem, design the system, consider security risks, comply with legal requirements and ensure that the final product delivers real value to its users.
These decisions require human judgement.
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), one of the world’s leading computing organisations, has consistently emphasised that computing professionals are responsible not only for developing software but also for ensuring that technology is reliable, secure, ethical and beneficial to society.
Artificial intelligence can suggest solutions, but it cannot independently decide which solution is appropriate for a particular community, organisation or country.
Africa’s Greatest Advantage May Be Local Knowledge
For African countries, the rise of artificial intelligence presents opportunities that extend well beyond automation.
Banks continue expanding digital financial services. Governments are digitising public administration. Hospitals are adopting electronic medical records, while farmers increasingly rely on digital platforms for weather forecasts, crop advice and market information.
Each of these initiatives requires professionals who understand software engineering, cloud computing, cybersecurity, databases and increasingly, artificial intelligence itself.
Just as importantly, they require people who understand local realities.
An application designed for London or San Francisco may not automatically solve challenges faced in Lusaka, Nairobi, Kigali or Lagos. Differences in infrastructure, internet connectivity, payment systems, language and regulation often require solutions developed by people who understand the communities they serve.
This local knowledge remains one of Africa’s greatest competitive advantages.
The Role of the Software Engineer Is Changing
Many software companies have already incorporated AI coding assistants into their daily workflows.
Rather than replacing developers, these tools often automate repetitive tasks such as generating boilerplate code, writing documentation and identifying programming mistakes. This allows engineers to spend more time designing systems, improving security, reviewing AI-generated code and solving complex business problems.
Technology companies including Microsoft, Google and GitHub increasingly describe AI as a productivity tool that enhances software development rather than eliminating the need for skilled engineers.
As these tools become more sophisticated, the ability to evaluate, refine and supervise AI-generated code is rapidly becoming an essential professional skill.
Employers Are Looking Beyond Programming Languages
Recruitment trends suggest that employers increasingly value graduates who combine technical expertise with broader analytical and communication skills.
Knowledge of programming remains important, but organisations are also seeking professionals who understand cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, software architecture, databases, user experience, machine learning and responsible AI.
Equally valuable are skills that machines cannot easily replicate—critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, communication and ethical decision-making.
Universities around the world are responding by updating computer science programmes to include artificial intelligence, data science, cloud technologies and cybersecurity alongside traditional software engineering.
Learning AI May Be the Smartest Career Decision
Rather than replacing computer science, artificial intelligence is becoming part of it.
Students beginning university today are likely to graduate into workplaces where AI is as common as search engines and smartphones are today. Employers will increasingly expect graduates to understand not only how to write software but also how to collaborate effectively with intelligent systems.
Those who embrace these tools are likely to become more productive than previous generations of developers, enabling them to focus on innovation instead of repetitive programming tasks.
Looking Beyond the Headlines
Predictions that technology will eliminate programming jobs are not new. Similar concerns accompanied the arrival of high-level programming languages, visual development tools and cloud computing.
History suggests that software development evolves rather than disappears.
Artificial intelligence is unlikely to remove the need for computer scientists. Instead, it is redefining what successful computer scientists do.
For young Africans considering careers in technology, the challenge is no longer whether to study computer science. It is whether they are prepared to master the technologies that will define the next generation of digital innovation.
The software powering Africa’s hospitals, financial systems, schools, agricultural platforms and public services will still require human imagination, technical expertise and thoughtful leadership.
Artificial intelligence may write more code than ever before, but people will continue deciding which problems deserve to be solved—and how technology should improve lives.
